Porto di Messina sits on the Strait of Messina, the narrow channel that separates Sicily from Calabria and concentrates one of the Mediterranean's richest seasonal fish migrations. With 90 superyacht berths and full commercial-port infrastructure (Messina is the third-largest port of Italy by ferry traffic), it serves as the operational hub of north-east Sicily and the natural pivot point for charters working both the Calabrian and Aeolian routes. The Messinese pantry centres on the strait. Pesce spada (swordfish) is the historic catch of the area — harpooned from feluche-style boats from spring through autumn, served as involtini, alla ghiotta, in carpaccio. Tonno rosso (bluefin tuna) follows the swordfish migration. Mamertino DOC, the wine that Julius Caesar drank — one of the oldest documented in Italy — comes from the hills west of Messina. Sicilian specialties: arancini (with both rice and saffron, the Messinese version pointed), pidone messinese (a half-moon stuffed flatbread), focaccia messinese with tomato and cheese. Granita con brioche is the Sicilian breakfast institution and Messina is one of its strongholds. Crossover sourcing from Calabria (across the strait, stocco di Mammola, bergamot) is routine. Olive oil from the Monti Peloritani. Yachting season runs May through October. Messina suppliers handle same-day on fresh items, including direct-from-boat swordfish and tuna, and 24 to 48 hours on full provisioning, with onward delivery to the Aeolian Islands (Milazzo is the principal embarkation port, 35 km west) and the Taormina-Giardini Naxos coast.
