Porto di Ponza is the principal harbour of Ponza, the largest of the Pontine islands off the southern Lazio coast. With 55 superyacht berths in the natural bay beneath the pastel-painted village, it is the destination port of one of Italy's most distinctive island-hopping summer circuits — Ponza, Palmarola, Zannone and Ventotene make up a small archipelago that the Italian fleet uses heavily in August. Pantry: Pontine islands. The pantry is distinct from the Lazio mainland — closer in spirit to Naples than to Rome. Fresh fish from Ponza's own boats: red mullet, scorpionfish, dentex, sea bass, octopus, lobster. The local lentils and fava beans from terraced hillside fields. Olive oil from small Ponza producers (limited quantity, sourced direct). Wines: small island production of indigenous Biancolella and Forastera (the same varieties as Ischia, which is just south); mainland Lazio and Campania allocations supplement. Pontine specialties: zuppa di pesce alla ponzese, polpo alla luciana, the Pontine cipollotto (small spring onion). Specialty providers also handle the catering demand of Ponza's restaurants and the visiting fleet. Yachting season runs late May through September with very sharp Italian-fleet peaks in late July and August. Most non-island items arrive by daily ferry from Anzio or Formia — experienced Ponza suppliers plan in 24 to 48 hour cycles. Same-day fresh fish and produce are reliable.
