Porto di Tropea sits on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, on the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods), with 50 superyacht berths beneath the cliff-top old town and the dramatic silhouette of the Santa Maria dell'Isola monastery. The Calabrian coast remains one of the least developed Mediterranean yachting destinations of mainland Italy, and Tropea is the principal yachting base of the region — gateway to the Aeolian Islands (Stromboli is 30 nautical miles north-west) and the Capo Vaticano headland.
The Calabrian pantry is distinct, intense and largely undiscovered. Cipolla rossa di Tropea IGP — the sweet red onion that is the area's headline product, exported worldwide. 'Nduja di Spilinga — a spreadable spicy salami unique to Calabria, made with chilli and pork in a way found nowhere else in Italy. Pecorino del Poro and pecorino crotonese. Olive oil from the Calabrian DOP zones (Lametia, Bruzio). Wines: Cirò DOC reds (one of Italy's oldest documented wines, made from Gaglioppo, drunk by Olympic athletes in antiquity), Greco di Bianco passito. Fresh fish: swordfish from the Strait of Messina, tonno rosso, sea urchin. Calabrian specialties: stocco di Mammola, sardella (an anchovy-and-chilli preparation), liquorice DOP from the inland hills, bergamot oranges (the only Italian source, used worldwide for Earl Grey tea and perfumery).
Yachting season runs June through September. Tropea suppliers handle same-day on fresh items and 24 to 48 hours on full provisioning, with tender delivery to Capo Vaticano anchorages and onward to the Aeolian Islands.
