Porto di Viareggio is the largest pleasure marina of northern Tuscany and one of the principal yacht-building centres of Italy. The town's shipyards — Benetti, Perini Navi, Codecasa and several smaller specialists — make Viareggio a permanent operational base for both new-build commissioning and refit traffic, not just a summer destination. The 80 superyacht berths in the inner basin are supplemented by a wider commercial port that handles megayachts in dry dock or at the fitting-out quays.
Pantry: Versilia and Tuscan coast. Olive oil from the Lucchesia hills behind Viareggio, Vermentino di Liguria di Levante (just over the border) and Vermentino di Toscana from the coastal strip. Tuscan reds within easy reach: Chianti, Bolgheri (Sassicaia, Ornellaia), Maremma. Fresh fish from the Viareggio fishing fleet — the boats unload directly at the inner harbour each morning. Cacciucco alla viareggina (the signature Tyrrhenian fish stew), tordelli al sugo di carne (Versilia stuffed pasta), and the Lucca pantry: lardo di Colonnata, farro della Garfagnana, pecorino, Lucchese cured meats. Specialty providers in Viareggio also handle the high-volume crew-catering requirements of yards-in-build accounts.
Yachting season is effectively year-round given the refit traffic, with charter activity peaking May through September. Suppliers handle same-day on fresh items and 24 to 48 hours on full provisioning. Viareggio also serves as a sourcing hub for charters anchoring in the Tuscan Archipelago — Elba, Capraia, Giglio, Giannutri.
