Porto Ercole sits on the southern side of the Monte Argentario, opposite Porto Santo Stefano, with 75 superyacht berths and the historic Spanish-era fortifications of Forte Stella and Forte Filippo overlooking the bay. The atmosphere is markedly different from its northern counterpart — quieter, more residential, more directly connected to the Argentario's wooded interior. Several of Italy's most discreet luxury hotels (Il Pellicano, the Roman gardens above the village) cluster on the slopes above the port. Pantry: Maremma and Argentario. Olive oil from the Argentario and inland Maremma hills. Argentario Ansonica wine (indigenous, rare), Vermentino di Toscana, Maremma Toscana DOC reds and Morellino di Scansano DOCG. Bolgheri reds within easy reach. Fresh fish from the Porto Ercole auction and the Argentario's own boats — palamita, red mullet, scorpionfish, sea bass, lobster, the local sea urchins in spring. Lagoon products from the Orbetello area: bottarga di muggine, eel, sea bass farmed in the historic valli. Cinta senese pork, pecorino di Pienza, Chianina beef from the Val di Chiana. The Argentario's restaurants — particularly those of the luxury hotels — keep a sustained demand for premium catering accounts. Yachting season runs May through September. Porto Ercole peaks in late July and August with the Italian summer fleet and the international yachts working the Argentario's bays. Suppliers handle same-day on fresh items and 24 to 48 hours on full provisioning.
